The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reported more than 6 million motor vehicle accidents across the country in 2018. Even collisions that seem minor can result in injuries that have lasting effects on their victims, including emotional trauma. In some cases, physical injuries take weeks, months, or even years to recover from, making it difficult for victims to support themselves and their families.

Florida Has One of the Highest Rates of Car Accidents in the Country
Florida consistently falls among the states with the highest number of fatal accidents annually. From 2018 to 2019, the Insurance Information Institute (III) ranked Florida third on the list, just behind Texas and California.
While factors such as a high population and extreme weather conditions likely play a role in the number of traffic collisions in Florida, most accidents are preventable and can be attributed to driver errors. In fact, an NHTSA study found that 94% of all collisions result from driver behaviors such as recognition, decision, and performance errors. If the negligence of another driver caused the Leon County accident that resulted in the injuries to your extremities, a Tallahassee arm and leg injury lawyer can help you pursue just compensation for your losses.
Car Accidents Commonly Result in Arm and Leg Injuries
Over the past few decades, vehicle manufacturers have made significant improvements to safety features, which have helped decrease the mortality rate in motor vehicle collisions by a substantial margin. However, victims still suffer from injuries to both the upper and lower extremities.
Blunt force trauma in car accidents is one of the primary causes of extremity injuries, particularly broken arms and legs. According to the Mayo Clinic, some of the complications that can result from arm or leg fractures include:
- Problems healing
- Infection of the bone
- Nerve damage
- Arthritis
- Uneven growth
- Compartment syndrome

Filing a Claim Against the Liable Driver in a No-Fault State
Because Florida is a no-fault state, victims of car accidents may think that they do not have a right to take legal action against the driver who caused their accident. While Florida Statutes §627.7407 does place restrictions on circumstances under which you can file lawsuits, you can seek financial awards from liable parties in certain cases, such as when your personal injury protection (PIP) policy does not provide sufficient coverage for your injuries. A Tallahassee arm and leg injury lawyer can determine whether you can file a claim and help you move forward with the process.
Communicating with Insurance Companies
Even when dealing with your own insurance company, adjusters may try to take advantage of your circumstances and lack of experience with car accident claims by making false accusations or failing to consider the extent of your injuries. Insurance companies work for a profit, and they might not have your best interest in mind. A lawyer can deal with the insurance companies for you, including managing all negotiations and fighting for fair compensation for your injuries.
Compensation for Your Injuries in Car Accident Cases
If you suffered an arm or leg injury in a Tallahassee car accident, you might qualify for financial recovery for your losses. There are many different types of awards, and victims must meet specific criteria to be eligible for them. An attorney can help you seek one or more types of recovery in your case, which could include compensation for:
- Medical bills
- Lost wages
- Loss of future wages
- Property damage
- Pain and suffering
While we cannot guarantee that you will receive certain types or amounts, we can calculate the value of your damages and help you pursue adequate awards for your injuries.
The Statute of Limitations on Car Accident Claims in Florida
Victims of car accidents can pursue personal injury claims against the liable party or their insurance company in some cases, but they must do so within the Florida statute of limitations, or the legal time frame during which a person can file a civil claim. Florida typically allows victims up to four years from the date of the accident to sue the at-fault driver in their case. If you miss the filing deadline, you lose the opportunity to hold the driver accountable for excess damages not covered by your insurance.
