Social Security Disability Requirements
The Social Security Administration has its own unique guidelines for determining whether your disability qualifies you for benefits. Generally, you must meet the following criteria to receive SSD benefits:
- You are unable to perform the work you did previously
- You will continue to be in a state of disability for at least a calendar year
- Your doctor believes your condition will result in your death
- Your disability prohibits you from obtaining other work
In addition to these requirements, you must also have worked in jobs covered by Social Security long enough to have accrued the necessary Social Security credits to qualify.
What to Do After Submitting Your Social Security Application
Once your disability application is approved, you will receive monthly benefit payments until you are able to return to work.

Your claims examiner will review your SSD application to ensure it contains all the necessary information—birthday, social security number, medical history, employment history, earnings statements, and more.
