You have worked hard most of your life, but due to an injury, disease, or disability are no longer able to continue working. You may be stressed, upset, and worried about how you will pay your bills. However, you may be eligible for Social Security Disability (SSD) benefits to make ends meet.
If you are overwhelmed by the application process or have been denied Social Security Disability benefits, a Naples personal injury lawyer can help.
Benefits Available Through Social Security Disability
For those who qualify for Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefits, you may be able to receive monthly income payments that will help you pay for your essential needs, which could include housing, food, and clothing.
According to the Social Security Administration (SSA), the amount that you could receive in SSI funds will vary based on factors such as:
- How much the state may contribute on top of the federal amount you receive
- Whether or not you receive wages or funds from a pension
- If your spouse earns income and you live with your spouse
- And other factors
If you have worked for a sufficient period of time and earned enough work credits, you may be able to seek other benefits through Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI).
A personal Injury Claim Could Allow You to Seek Additional Compensation
We can also help you file an injury claim if your disability resulted from another party’s negligence. If you are eligible to file a personal injury claim or lawsuit, we could seek the following damages on your behalf:
- Pain and suffering
- Medical bills
- Lost wages
- Reduced earning capacity
- And more
You Need a Qualifying Diagnosis for Social Security Disability Benefits in Naples, Florida
According to the Social Security Administration (SSA), there is a wide range of disabling impairments that may make you eligible for Social Security Disability payments. These conditions are outlined in the Social Security Blue Book.
The Blue Book lays out specific criteria and impairments that may make you eligible for Social Security Disability benefits. It is important to note that just having one of the listed impairments does not guarantee you will receive benefits.
Here are a few examples of impairments that may qualify you for SSD benefits:
-
- Autism
- Bipolar and related disorders
- Brain tumor
- Cancer
- Chronic heart failure
- Chronic liver failure
- Chronic respiratory disorders
- Cystic fibrosis
- Epilepsy
- Fracture of the pelvis
- Heart transplant
- HIV
- IBD
- Loss of hearing
- Loss of limb
- Loss of sight
- Loss of speech
- Lung transplantation
-
- Lupus
- Schizophrenia
- Severe burns
Keep in mind that this is a limited list of impairments. Due to the length and technicality of the SSA’s Blue Book, it is best to work with a Social Security Disability attorney to understand if your impairments qualify you for Social Security Disability benefits.

Understanding Social Security Disability Eligibility Requirements
The qualification process for Social Security Disability can be complex and overwhelming. In fact, nearly 75% of all first-time applications for SSD benefits are denied.
Our legal team is here to walk you through the SSD application process, and it starts with understanding how eligibility is determined. This includes meeting the SSA’s definition of disability and obtaining enough work credits.
Meet SSA Impairment Requirements
The first step to obtaining Social Security Disability benefits is meeting SSA’s definition of disability. These requirements are quite specific and include the following:
- Being unable to work at all (even in a different, lower-paying position)
- Having been unemployed for the last year (except in a few rare instances)
- Having a condition listed in the Social Security Blue Book or a similarly debilitating condition
Social Security Disability benefits are not available to partially disabled people. If you are unable to work full time but can work part-time, you may not be eligible for benefits.
Meet Other Specific Criteria Based on the Program
There are two programs available for disabled persons unable to work. The first is Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI). The second is Supplemental Security Income (SSI).
- SSDI: To qualify for SSDI, you must have earned enough work credits. Over the years, you have paid into Social Security. Each year you work, you earn a specific number of credits based on the amount you earn.
The amount of credits you will need to qualify for SSDI benefits depends on several factors, including how old you are and what year you were disabled. Younger workers generally need fewer work credits.
- SSI: For SSI, you must have a very low income and few assets.

How a Social Security Disability lawyer in Naples Can Help
There are several benefits to having a Naples Social Security Disability lawyer on your side who understands the process. Here is how our legal team can help you:
File Your Disability Claim
We will start with a case review, where we will explain the eligibility requirements and ask questions to better understand your situation. If we take on your case, we will begin to gather all the required paperwork to prove you meet the requirements for disability. Then, we file your claim for you.
Our team will be on hand to answer questions and explain your rights throughout the application process.
Appeal a Social Security Disability Denial
The SSA denies most of the claims it receives. These denials often occur due to technical issues or lack of evidence. We understand what causes most denials and work to build a strong case so you get approved the first time.
If the SSA denies your claim, our team will work to gather more evidence and file an appeal for your claim. You owe us nothing unless you get benefits.
