Contributing Factors That Result in Poor Living Conditions
Working in a nursing home requires special skills and a love of helping the elderly. Many nursing homes strive to provide safe and supportive environments for seniors. However, some nursing homes are understaffed, leaving residents to rely upon stressed and overworked caregivers for help. This can lead to instances of physical and emotional abuse toward elderly residents.
According to PBS, some contributing factors that can result in poor nursing home conditions include:
- A high turnover rate
- Small pools to choose from when selecting new employees
- The exploitation of current nursing home employees, including long work hours
- Limited financial resources
In order to fill positions quickly, a nursing home may fail to conduct thorough background checks or properly vet new hires. This oversight on the part of a nursing facility can lead to the serious injuries or deaths of elderly residents.

Uncaring behavior or rough actions by nursing home staff members can result in one or more of the following types of elder abuse, per the National Institute on Aging (NIA):
- Physical abuse, such as hitting, slapping, or pushing
- Emotional abuse, including yelling or preventing visits with loved ones
- Sexual abuse, which includes forcing a resident to engage in unwanted sexual acts
