A pedestrian is dead after being hit by a car in the parking lot of a Cape Coral grocery store on Friday.
Cape Coral Police Department crash investigators said the 73-year-old driver of the car suffered a cardiac episode during the crash in the ALDI parking lot, 1481 SW Pine Island Road. The driver was parked in the south end of the parking lot while the 85-year-old pedestrian was walking in that same area.
Officials said the driver started to back out of the parking space when he suffered the cardiac-related medical episode causing him to accelerate at a high rate of speed, in reverse and hit the pedestrian.
The pedestrian got trapped under the car as it continued in reverse for 20 feet and hit a shopping cart retaining wall. CCPD investigators said the driver placed the car in “Drive” and began pulling away from the area of impact with the retaining wall.
Crash investigators said the pedestrian remained trapped under the car as it drove southeast in the parking lot for 87 feet.
The pedestrian was pronounced dead on scene by Lee County EMS. Investigators said no signs of chemical impairment were found when they made contact with the driver at a local hospital.
Alcohol and speed are not factors in this crash.
