Hurricanes Leave Property Owners with Significant Repair Costs
Key West and the rest of the Florida Keys are frequent targets of hurricanes. Damage by hurricanes in Key West and the neighboring Florida Keys includes:
- Lost shingles and other roof damage
- Trees falling on structures, cars, or fences
- Structural damage to buildings
- Broken windows, doors, and garage doors
- Damage to garages, sheds, and fences
- Mold and water damage to the structure or property within it
Hurricanes cause millions of dollars in damages for residents and business owners in the Keys. Thousands file insurance claims after hurricanes to recover covered losses. Unfortunately, this process does not always go smoothly. Insurance companies do not always pay settlements as they should, and navigating the claims process can be stressful.
The Law Offices of Anidjar & Levine can deal with your insurance company following a hurricane, or we can help you if the insurer has refused to offer what you deserve based on your policy coverage.

What It Takes to Get Compensation for Hurricane Damage
Our team can work both independently and with your insurance company to make sure you get an appropriate settlement. We do this by:
Launching an Independent Investigation
We want to know every detail about your property, your insurance policy, and the losses you sustained. To gain a better understanding of your case, we can:
- Come to see your property for ourselves
- Collect paperwork from you, such as repair bills or estimates and any photographs you took
- Take photos of our own
- Review your insurance policy or policies to determine what is covered, what is not, what your responsibilities are, and what the insurer owes you
- Research the hurricane itself, including where it made landfall, wind and flooding statistics, and so on
- Calculate the exact value of your losses and which policy you should seek compensation under
The sooner we can begin this investigation, the better we may be able to understand what happened to your property, and the sooner we can start fighting for the amount you truly deserve.
Cooperating with the Insurance Company’s Investigation
Your insurance company will probably assign an adjuster to your case. This insurance adjuster may call you on the phone, speak to you in person, visit your property, take photos of your losses, and more.
While it is important to let the adjuster do their job, remember that they work for the insurance company, not for you. It is often safer to let your lawyer speak with the adjuster on your behalf, supply them with any documentation they ask for, and so on. Otherwise, the adjuster may be able to use your words against you to deny your claim.
Building a Strong Case
By collecting evidence and explaining your rights to you, we can protect you from any of the insurance company’s attempts to undervalue your case. With enough evidence, we may be able to persuade the insurer that it is in their best interest to stop fighting your claim and pay what you need quickly.
As we work to build your case, your attorney will stay in frequent contact with you, answering every question and updating you about the progress they have made.
Covered Losses in a Key West Hurricane Damage Case
Homeowner’s policies can vary greatly. Many policies cover hurricane damage caused by wind, downed trees, or other hurricane-related damage. This may include:
- Roof repair or replacement
- Repair of structural damage to buildings
- Replacement of broken windows
- Garage, shed, or fence repair
- Damage from downed trees or power lines
- Siding damage from wind
- Repair or replacement of doors and garage doors
- Water damage that occurs because of a leaking or missing roof
- Food spoilage related to a long power outage
Our team can help you understand the coverage in your policy and prove your covered damages. We can also help you file a claim for storm surge or flash flood damages if you carry “FEMA insurance” from the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP).
As a part of reviewing your policies and explaining your coverages, we will discuss your deductible. This money will be what it costs you out of pocket before your insurance company should begin to foot the bill for repairs. Many insurance providers force coastal residents to pay a special deductible when the damage occurs because of a hurricane. This is often a percentage of the property value and may be significantly higher than your normal deductible.
Different Policies Cover Different Losses
When your property suffers hurricane damage, it can be hard to tell the precise cause of the damage. Was it the result of wind gusts, hail, a storm surge, or something else?
Unfortunately, to get proper compensation, it is often necessary to specify exactly how your losses occurred. This is because most hurricane insurance policies do not cover flooding damage. If your home or business sustained water damage, mold, or other flood-related damage, you would need to rely on flood insurance, not hurricane insurance.
The Law Offices of Anidjar & Levine understands how complex insurance coverage can be. We can tell you what your policy covers and how to get every dollar of compensation you are eligible to receive.
