One Person is Dead and Another is in Critical Condition After a Wrong-Way Crash in Miami.
According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the crash happened on the westbound lanes of State Road 836, near Northwest 17th Avenue, just after 7:30 a.m., Saturday.
Investigators said a black Hyundai was traveling eastbound in the westbound lanes of the Dolphin Expressway when it collided with a white Nissan head-on. The impact caused one of the cars to catch fire.
The driver of the Nissan was pronounced dead at the scene.
Cellphone video posted to social media by Only in Dade captured first responders and good Samaritans as they rendered aid to the driver of the Hyundai.
One of the good Samaritans, Agustin Rivas, is a doctor.
“As soon as he saw it, he got out of his car and tried to help,” said Trace Flippo, Rivas’ son.
“We stabilized him, and he started breathing by himself, and I think he’s going to be fine,” said Rivas
The driver, who survived was transported to Jackson Memorial Hospital’s Ryder Trauma Center in critical condition.
Troopers spent the morning investigating the crash, while crews worked to put out the flames.
FHP and police temporarily shut down 836 near the scene of the crash. It has since reopened to traffic.
Authorities have not provided further details as to possible charges the driver of the Hyundai could face as they continue to investigate.
