The Type of Coverage You Are Eligible for With Your Insurance Policy
Regardless of what the insurance adjuster may tell you, your insurance policy clearly outlines the type and amount of coverage you have on your homeowner’s policy. Unfortunately, your insurance provider may use the wording in the policy against you instead of for you.
For instance, they may claim that your “type” of damage is excluded from the policy or that there is not enough evidence to prove that the hurricane is what damaged your home. However, your insurance policy makes it clear what you are eligible to claim, including:
- Damaged or destroyed contents on the property.
- Debris cleanup and removal from the property.
- Materials you purchased to protect your home from further damage.
- Items damaged by high winds.
- Expenses you incurred making other living arrangements.
- Additional buildings on your property not attached to the house.
- Other major items such as pools, fences, or a wood deck.
The insurance policy may not cover anything damaged by flooding. However, if you took out a separate policy for flood insurance, then your property will be covered under that policy as well.
Once you pay your deductible, the insurance company should pay the full amount of your damages up to the limits set in your policy.
Why Your Insurance Company Will Not Pay Out
Insurance companies have to process thousands of claims after a major hurricane. For this reason, they may find ways to deny claims or reduce payouts. They may come up with several reasons for not accepting your claim, such as:
Your Policy is Not Valid Under Certain Circumstances
The insurance adjuster can use the fine print in the policy to point out that your insurance policy is not valid and will not cover your damages.
The Value of Your Claim is Too High
It does not matter that you hired a reputable contractor to inspect the damage and he or she provides an accurate estimate of repairs. The insurance company may come back and say that the cost of your repairs does not reflect the damage or is not worth the value of your home.
This Is the Final Offer — Take It or Leave It
The insurance provider will lead you to believe that the only choice you have is to accept their offer.
Your Claim Is Still Being Processed
It has been several months since you have heard from the insurance company. There is no indication that the company has received your claim or that the adjuster will offer a payout or a settlement. You may feel like giving up.
The Law Offices of Anidjar & Levine understands your frustration. We work with homeowners across Hollywood and South Florida who have been in situations similar to yours. Our law firm has helped them receive fair compensation. We can also help you.
