Common Causes of Jet Ski Accidents
Jet skis may be fun recreational watercrafts, but they can lead to accidents. Some of the most common causes of jet ski accidents include:
- Boating while under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
- Failing to follow safety rules and laws.
- Improperly labeled hazards in the waterway, such as rocks, docks, or trees.
- Mechanical failure of the watercraft
- Failure to properly maintain the craft
How a Jet Ski Accident Lawyer Can Help
If you were injured in a jet ski accident, a boat accident attorney can help you navigate the legal process. This may include the following:
Investigating Your Accident
The first step to filing a claim for your jet ski accident is determining what exactly happened. We will investigate your accident and gather evidence to support a claim.
Building a Case
Once we have gathered the necessary evidence, including medical reports and police reports your attorney will begin to build a case. This evidence shows the damages you suffered and why the liable party should be responsible for those damages.
Submitting Your Claim
Once we have investigated your accident and built your case, we will submit the claim to the liable party’s insurance company. In some cases, this will be all that is needed. Sometimes, however, the liable party will not negotiate in good faith. We are not afraid to take your case to court if this happens.
Fighting for Your Rights in Court
If we are unable to reach an appropriate settlement with the insurance company or liable party, we may take your case to court. If this occurs, we will fight for your right to recover damages in a court of law.

Most Common Liable Parties in Jet Ski Accidents
The most important part of building a claim is determining who is responsible for your injuries. In jet ski accidents, there can be many different liable parties. They may include:
A Boat Owner or Operator
If a boater or another jet ski operator caused you to crash, they may be liable. This could occur if another boater was under the influence, ignored waterway safety laws, or failed to operate their craft with due care.
A Boat or Jet Ski Rental Company
If a rental company failed to maintain their boats or jet skis properly, it may cause the craft to fail. If this failure caused your accident, the company could be liable. In addition, if it knowingly rented a watercraft to a drunk or underage boater, it may be legally liable for that boater’s actions.
Owner of the Body of Water
If the accident occurred on a private body of water, the owner may be liable. This might happen if, for example, they insisted the water was deep enough to operate a jet ski safely, but it was not.
Manufacturer/Designer of The Jet Ski
Sometimes jet ski failures cause accidents. If your injuries were caused by a flaw in the design or manufacture of the personal watercraft, you may be able to recover damages from the company that designed or manufactured the jet ski.
Damages You May Recover Following Your Jet Ski Accident
Jet ski accidents can result in severe injuries or even death. This is due to the combination of the high speeds a jet ski can reach combined with risk of drowning after injury. If you have been injured in a jet ski accident, you may be able to recover the following damages:
- Medical Bills: You may recover the cost of emergency care, surgeries, and rehabilitation costs.
- Lost Wages: If your injury results in missing days or even weeks at work, you may be able to recover the wages you lost.
- Future Lost Wages: If your injury makes it impossible for you to work in the same capacity, you might be able to recover the loss of future wages as well.
- Pain and Suffering: You may also be able to recover non-economic damages, such as pain and suffering.

The Florida Statute of Limitations for Jet Ski Accidents
Like most states, Florida places a time limit on personal injury lawsuits. This time limit is called the statute of limitations. According to Florida law, you have four years from the date of your accident to file a personal injury lawsuit. In most cases, after this time has passed you will be unable to hold the liable party responsible for their actions.
