Different Types of Birth Injuries
Who can be held responsible for your child’s birth injury will rest on the details of your situation. For example, if a doctor forcefully extracted the child from the birth canal, they could have injured the baby and be held responsible for your losses. If your child was in the care of a nurse who dropped them, you may be able to pursue damages from that party.
The type of injury your child sustained will play a role in who you can pursue for damages. You may be able to implicate multiple parties in your claim.
Some examples of birth injuries include:
- Fractures. An infant’s bones are tiny and delicate at birth. During delivery, if the physician uses too much pressure while delivering the baby, a fracture may occur.
- Brain injuries. This can result when the infant is left without oxygen for too long, or the umbilical cord gets wrapped around their neck.
- Paralysis to the face. According to the Stanford Children’s Hospital, this may occur if the doctor puts too much pressure on the face during delivery, causing nerve damage.
- Cephalohematoma. This is when bleeding occurs under the skull. According to “Cephalohematoma,” this condition occurs when undue pressure is placed on the head using physician tools, such as forceps or a vacuum extractor.
