University of Washington research cites glyphosate, the active ingredient in Roundup, as a carcinogen that increases the risk of many forms of cancer. In addition, Mayo Clinic research indicates that exposure to carcinogens can increase your risk of developing lung cancer. Therefore, it is possible for Roundup to cause lung cancer.
Being diagnosed with lung cancer can mean you have one of two types of the disease:
- Small cell lung cancer
- Non-small cell lung cancer
The type of lung cancer you are diagnosed with will determine your treatment plan. If you believe exposure to Roundup caused lung cancer in you or a member of your family, you could have options for financial compensation from the weed killer’s (for example, breathing Roundup, sprayed Roundup) manufacturer.
Diagnosing, Typing, and Staging Lung Cancer
Symptoms like persistent coughing, a cough that produces blood, and otherwise unexplained chest pain might send you to your doctor. If they view these collected symptoms as warning signs of lung cancer, they might request laboratory tests. According to the American Cancer Society, a definitive lung cancer diagnosis can be made by looking at a sample of your lung cells in a lab.
After a diagnosis is confirmed, your doctor will stage your lung cancer—from Stage One to Stage Four—to determine its severity and the aggressiveness of your treatment plan. Reaching these determinations can mean additional exams like a PET (positron emission tomography) scan or bone scan.
Ask your lawyer how the cost of these diagnostic procedures and their subsequent treatments can be included in your personal injury insurance claim or lawsuit.
Physical and Financial Recovery from Exposure to Roundup
Finding out you have lung cancer can mean months or years of medical tests, exams, and treatments. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) indicates that one or more of the following costly and extensive lung cancer treatment options may be recommended:
- Surgery: an invasive procedure to remove cancerous lung tissue
- Radiation: high-powered energy beams designed to target and kill cancer cells
- Chemotherapy: IV or oral drugs used to kill cancer cells
- Targeted therapy: IV or oral drugs that aim to block the spread and growth of cancer cells
Because lung cancer can take an emotional toll on its sufferers and on family members whose loved ones succumb to the disease, your lawyer may be able to help you receive compensation for your pain and suffering and for mental and emotional anguish. In addition, financial recovery from Roundup-related lung cancer may include compensation for:
- Past lost income
- Anticipated lost income
- Past medical bills
- Anticipated medical bills
If someone you love succumbed to lung cancer caused by exposure to Roundup, you may also be able to collect compensation for their funeral and burial expenses and for the loss of their support and services. Review the cause of your case of lung cancer with your lawyer, who can help assign an accurate financial value to your claim.
