A 31-Year-Old Man from Port Charlotte Died in a Friday Morning Crash that Happened at Veterans Boulevard and Atwater Street.
Troopers with the Florida Highway Patrol said they responded to the scene of the crash just after 4 a.m. They disclosed that a 23-year-old North Port man was speeding eastbound on Veterans Boulevard near Atwater Street.
The 31-year-old man and his 29-year-old passenger were heading north on Atwater Street in an SUV. As they crossed the intersection, the North Port man ran a red light and slammed into the left side of the SUV.
After the collision, the North Port man’s car drove north, across the westbound lanes of Veterans Boulevard and hit a tree on the north shoulder of Veterans.
The Port Charlotte man and his female passenger were both transported to Lee Memorial Hospital. The man died of his injuries and the woman suffered serious injuries.
The North Port man was also seriously injured in the crash.
Veterans Boulevard was shut down in all directions from Cochran Boulevard to Yorkshire Street as troopers investigated the crash.
The crash investigation is ongoing and charges are pending, troopers said.
