The Orlando Sentinel referred to Florida in 2018 as a “killing field for cyclists,” and you might be hard-pressed to disagree after reviewing the statistics. The Sentinel made their claim based on findings from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), which determined that Florida ranked higher than most states in bicyclist deaths.

Florida’s Roads Are Dangerous for Bicyclists
Florida’s roads, beaches, and sidewalks can be enticing for those who want to ditch the car and hop on a bicycle. Still, too often, leisure bicycle rides or a trek on a road bike can result in serious injury or death.
Florida’s roads can become congested with traffic, especially during the peak of tourist seasons. This can lead to:
- More cars on the road than usual
- An increased number of drivers who are unfamiliar with local roads
- More bicyclists on or near the road than usual
This combination can be a recipe for severe injury and even deadly. It is vital that motorists take due care to prevent colliding with one or more bicyclists or running a bicyclist off of the road in a way that could cause serious injury or death.
Motorists Must Be Wary of Harming Bicyclists
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) details bicycle safety and several precautions that motorists must take to avoid causing a collision with a bicyclist. The stakes of striking a bicyclist are generally higher than colliding with another vehicle, so these precautions are of the utmost importance.
Some of these precautionary measures include:
- Yielding the right of way to bicyclists
- Being cautious and checking blind spots for the presence of bicyclists
- Avoiding passing a bicyclist under any circumstance that could be unsafe
- Generally avoiding dangerous driving behaviors
Statistics suggest that motorists are not always following a code of conduct for road safety that would keep bicyclists safe. If you or your loved one was the victim in a bicycle accident, you have the right to seek justice.
