File a Police Report Immediately After an Auto Accident
If you were involved in an auto accident, filing and obtaining a copy of a police report is an important part of identifying the at-fault driver and their insurance company. Usually, a law enforcement officer will come to the scene of the accident, assess the situation, and file a police accident report afterward. If the police did not appear at the scene of your traffic accident, you can file a report by visiting the local police department. In many cases, you can file your report online, as well. Either way, the state of Florida requires you to file a police report if the traffic accident you were involved in caused physical injuries. Additional circumstances that require that you report a crash include:
- Any deaths caused by the accident
- The at-fault driver flees the scene
- The use of alcohol or drugs
- Either vehicle requires towing
- Involvement of a commercial vehicle
- Either vehicle sustains substantial damage
A police report can help your lawyer obtain critical information, including the name and contact information of the at-fault driver, their insurance carrier, and witnesses. A personal injury lawyer may also request additional supporting information.
