One Bicyclist is Dead and Two Others are Injured After They Were Struck by a Vehicle Sunday Morning on US 1 in St. Johns County.
According to officials, the crash happened at about 2:34 a.m. at US 1 near I-95 in St. Augustine.
The three bicyclists were competing in the annual “Sea to Sea” Expedition Race in St. Johns County.
An eyewitness revealed what he saw when the crash happened.
“Me and my wife had just started to go to bed and we just heard a loud boom,” the witness said.
At first he thought someone hit a deer, but after checking US-1, he realized it was much more severe than that.
“I found a bicycle helmet sitting in the road and that was the moment I realized people involved,” he said.
FHP says the driver of the vehicle was a 27-year-old man from St. Augustine. They are unsure if he will be charged as the investigation is still ongoing.
The victim, who did not survive his injuries, has been identified as a 46-year-old male.
