Florida Highway Patrol Troopers Arrested Two Persons After the Driver of a Gray 2015 Chevy Cruz Struck and Killed a Man in Pompano Beach and Fled the Scene.
According to FHP, the Chevy driver, identified as Victor Ocampo, struck and killed a 37-year-old man from Belle Glade who was working on the northbound lanes of Interstate 95.
“A vehicle that was traveling in the right Express Lanes veered into the left and struck the construction worker,” said Lt. Yanko Reyes, a spokesman for FHP.
Reyes said the victim was fixing a “Road Work Ahead” sign just before 3 a.m., south of Sample Road. FHP troopers said Ocampo, 32, fled the scene.
“This is somebody’s friend, somebody’s son,” Reyes said.
Detectives found the Chevy Cruz parked at a Days Inn at 1700 W. Broward Blvd., in Fort Lauderdale. Troopers also arrested Natalia Londono Mejia, who they said was a passenger in the car when the fatal hit-and-run crash happened. She is accused of not cooperating with the investigation.
Ocampo is facing charges of vehicular homicide, failure to stop, driving with a suspended license, tampering with evidence, and reckless driving.
