Seek Medical Attention
Ideally, you should head to the hospital or a doctor’s office for a medical exam immediately after the crash. If your injuries are serious, you should call an ambulance to transport you to get care.
Chances are, however, that if you are reading this, you have already left the accident scene and gone home, and it is now hours, days, or even weeks after the crash.
No matter how much time has passed, it is still better to seek medical attention now than to continue to wait or, worse, not get medical help at all.
Even if you do not believe that you sustained any injuries in the crash, you will not know this for sure until you get a medical evaluation. Some injuries may not present obvious symptoms right away.
The sooner you address any injuries you might have, the easier to treat them. Moreover, if you do have injuries, your attorney needs to be able to connect them to your accident to pursue compensation from the responsible party or parties, a task that is much easier if too much time does not pass between the crash and your first medical evaluation.
Contact Your Insurance Company
Your insurance policy probably contains a provision that you must contact the company and report your accident as soon as possible. As a general rule, though, you should not volunteer any more information than the basics. Wait until you have first spoken with an attorney to go into details about the crash.
Even more important, if another driver was at fault for the crash, do not speak to his or her insurance company without an attorney. Unlike your own insurance company, the other driver’s insurer cannot require you to cooperate with its representatives, and doing so can put your claim at risk. There is always a chance they can take a statement you make, twist your words around, and use it against you to reduce or deny your claim.
Meet With a Car Accident Lawyer
Meet with an attorney as soon as possible after your accident. Most reputable car accident lawyers will offer a free consultation, a face-to-face meeting at which they will answer your questions, review your case, and give you advice on what your options are. At that point, you can decide whether you feel you need legal representation.

Supply Your Attorney With Any Evidence You Have
Were you able to take pictures or video at the accident scene? Interview witnesses about what they saw? Did the crash occur in a business district or at an intersection where a surveillance camera might have been rolling somewhere?
Your attorney can use this information to build your claim. Turn over any and all evidence you have to your lawyer, and try to recount to him or her what happened in the crash as vividly as possible.
