How Roundup Connects to Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma

Research published in February 2019 by the University of Washington (UW) revealed a “compelling link” between Roundup and NHL. The meta-analysis of herbicide studies led researchers to conclude there is a 41% heightened risk of NHL for agricultural workers who are heavily exposed to glyphosate, the main ingredient in Roundup.

Prior to this study, the World Health Organization’s International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) rocked the scientific community with its announcement that, after reviewing Canadian, Swedish, and U.S. data related to glyphosate exposure, as well as results from studies conducted on animals, the IARC would classify glyphosate as a “probable human carcinogen.” IARC’s studies further added that the herbicide was likely to be genotoxic—able to change the genetic information in human cells—which can lead to cancer in humans.

Roundup Manufacturers Were Aware of the Cancerous Risks

Cases already presented and litigated against Roundup manufacturer Roundup and Bayer AG (Monsanto’s new owner) revealed evidence that Monsanto was aware of the fact that glyphosate causes cancer, but it failed to inform the public of this risk. Furthermore, plaintiffs’ attorneys alleged that Monsanto falsified research results that would have otherwise exposed the glyphosate’s dangerous properties. They also provided internal corporate documents that allegedly prove that Monsanto tried to sway heavyweight influencers, like regulators and scientists, about Roundup’s safety.

The Basis for a Product Liability Case

To date, lawsuits against Roundup manufacturers have relied on science to tell the story of the mega-corporations’ strict liability in cases where plaintiffs suffered serious and deadly cancers after being exposed to the popular weed killer.

This leaves it up to your lawyer to provide evidence of your cancer diagnosis, as well as proof of your exposure to Roundup, including the frequency and duration of your exposure. The more documentation your lawyer has, the better.

With the documents suggesting that Monsanto and/or Bayer falsified research results and tried to influence scientists and regulators, the company can also be scrutinized for failure to warn consumers about the dangers of using its product.
