The Miami Police Department has confirmed that two of its officers have been involved in a severe accident on Southwest 12th Avenue during an attempt to stop a driver at a sobriety checkpoint.
It was reported that the officers flagged down a driver in a 2011 Ford Fusion Titanium. The man was driving south on Southwest 12th Avenue when he was stopped by officers.
Police reported that the driver tried to outrun the officers when he crashed into the police officer’s patrol car. After the crash the driver got out of his vehicle, uninjured, and attempted to flee the scene on foot. He was apprehended by other officers that were at the checkpoint.
EMS arrived at the accident scene to render first aid treatment to the injured officers. Emergency crews reported that the two officers were transported to the nearest hospital by ambulance.
The 32-year-old male driver in the car was not injured in the crash and was immediately taken into custody. Officers say the incident is under investigation and no further information has been made available to the public.
Glen Levine, from the Law Firm of Anidjar and Levine, comments on this crash: “This was a serious accident that left two police officer seriously injured. Accidents like this are one of the most dangerous kinds of accidents. This type of accident usually happens because of driver error, meaning they are preventable. Sadly, the innocent victims of these crashes are rendered powerless: often, there’s nothing you can do when an oncoming vehicle is bearing down on you.. We wish that all involved have a speedy recovery from their injuries in this terrible accident.”
