A fiery accident stranded hundreds of motorists on Interstate 95 as traffic came to a standstill, police said.

Florida Highway Patrol reported that the fiery accident happened on Interstate 95. Officials said a Toyota SUV collided with a GMC SUV as they were both heading north on Interstate 95. Law enforcement did not say why the SUVs collided and have not released any more information regarding how the accident occurred.

The GMC overturned during the crash and the driver suffered serious injuries. According to the police, they found one of the SUV drivers in a critical condition. Shortly after EMS arrived, they airlifted him from the scene to the nearest hospital.

He allegedly suffered trauma to his head and chest. The EMS spokesperson said they are hopeful he will survive the injuries.

The fiery accident shut down all northbound lanes of traffic for several hours.

The accident remains under investigation by the highway patrol and no further details were released.
