The Miami Police Department has confirmed the death of a driver after his vehicle struck a tree and an unoccupied building before catching fire on Southwest 2nd Street.

Officers said the deadly crash happened on Southwest 2nd Street in Miami.

Eyewitnesses said the deceased was driving a Ford SUV, heading west on Southwest 2nd Street, when the SUV left the roadway and traveled onto the east shoulder. The SUV struck a tree and an unoccupied building, troopers said. The vehicle then caught fire along with a small section of the building.

Firefighters who quickly arrived on the scene of the accident discovered the vehicle was fully engulfed in flames.  The fires were extinguished by Fire Rescue team.

The driver was pronounced dead at the scene before he could be transported to the hospital. Law enforcement said no one was inside the building at the time of the crash and fire.

The road was closed due to the incident while traffic crews cleared the vehicle and debris. It was later reopened.

The crash remains under investigation.
