The Florida Highway Patrol is investigating a crash along State Road 80 in Fort Myers that left a Lehigh Acres man critically injured.

In a report by the FHP, a driver was westbound in the right lane of SR 80 in a 2004 Ford F-150 truck.  54 year old Jose M. Pimenta of Naples, was driving a 2006 Volvo east in the center lane of SR 80 before Shoreland Drive.

The crash happened when the Ford F-150 truck that was westbound went off the road and onto the grassy shoulder, the FHP said. He turned to sharply and entered into the eastbound lanes, spun around and crossed Pimenta’s path. The truck hit Pimenta’s vehicle and both vehicles skidded to a stop blocking traffic on eastbound 80.

Mr. Pimenta, the driver of the Volvo, had minor injuries and was treated at the scene.

The FHP said the driver of the truck was in critical condition at Lee Memorial Hospital. Charges are pending.
