A man from Fort Myers was killed when his Volkswagen slammed head-on into the back of a stopped waste dump truck on Daniels Parkway.
The Florida Highway Patrol has identified the man as Jonathan Powell, age thirty-one. In a report by the FHP, it was learned that Powell was driving a 2016 Jetta east on Daniels and was approaching the red traffic light at Plantation Road.
The traffic light had stopped a waste dump truck and FHP said Powell had failed to stop and then hit the back of the truck. There was no evidence that Powell had applied brakes before the occurrence of the crash, according to FHP troopers who were at the scene.
Powell was taken to Gulf Coast Medical Center where he was declared dead on arrival.
A FHP spokesman in a statement said that a trooper in a cruiser very close to the crash scene, together with a civilian motorist, did try to save the driver. The Trooper smashed the window in order to get Powell out and performing CPR before EMTs arrived. The trooper had a cut on his arm as a result of smashing the window. He was treated at the scene.
It was not reported if the driver of the Mack waste dump truck was hurt in this accident.
