Fort Myers Bicyclist, Steven Mammarella, Dies After U.S. 41 Accident With Lee County Sheriff’s Car In Estero

The Florida Highway Patrol is investigating a fatal crash between a Lee County Sheriff’s Office cruiser and a Fort Myers bicyclist at US 41 and Estero Parkway in South Lee County.

In a report by the FHP the Ford Crown Victoria Cruiser, driven by the Lee County Sheriff’s Office employee, was southbound on 41 in the center lane approaching a green light at Estero Parkway. It is unclear if the employee is a deputy or another rank.

The bicyclist, who has been identified as Steven Mammarella age 29, was crossing U.S. 41 on the north side of the intersection traveling east. It was determined that he traveled into the center lane into the cruiser’s path, the FHP reported.  This is when the right front of the cruiser hit the left side of Mammarella’s bicycle.

Witnesses told investigators in a FHP report that they saw a white van traveling southbound after the initial crash with sparks coming from the bottom of the Van. It is, however, unknown if the van had hit the cyclist or debris.

The victim was not wearing a helmet, according to FHP. He was taken to Gulf Coast Medical Center by Lee County EMS and later pronounced dead.

The FHP spokesperson said that at the time of the crash the cruiser was not responding to a call.  And also did not have any emergency equipment activated.

Comments:

Marc Anidjar, from the Law Firm of Anidjar & Levine, comments about this accident:   “We hope that it can be quickly discovered by the FHP investigators what caused this accident and the death of Mr. Mammarella.  It is unclear but possible that the Sheriff’s cruiser failed to yield the right of way to the cyclist.  If this is true then a wrongful death claim can help a family recover financially during their time of grief.”
