Ft. Lauderdale Police confirmed three people suffered severe injuries after two vehicles crashed into each other on South Andrews Avenue.

The accident happened at the intersection of South Andrews Avenue and Southeast 21st Street, police said. Eyewitnesses claimed the driver of the 2015 Hyundai Accent traveled north on South Andrews Avenue when the crash occurred. He was reportedly driving at a high speed and subsequently lost control of the car.

Meanwhile, the other driver, who was with his wife, was traveling west of Southeast 21st Street when the accident happened. The Hyundai driver swerved at the intersection after losing control and crashed head-on with the other vehicle.

Due to the impact, both vehicles flipped. Incidentally, the Hyundai driver was not wearing a seat belt when the crash happened, but the other driver and passenger were.

The couple sustained severe injuries; EMS treated them at the scene of the accident. Paramedics later transported the couple for medical treatment.

The Hyundai driver suffered critical injuries to the head, neck and chest. Information from the medical center indicated that he is out of surgery at this time.

Authorities said the accident remains under investigation.
