A man lost his life in a deputy involved crash in Deerfield Beach in Broward. The crash occurred on Northeast Third Avenue.

An account of the crash by members of the victim’s family said, Leonardo Littlejohn was driving north in his Hyundai when a Broward Sheriff’s Office cruiser crashed into the car from the rear. The collision made the Hyundai flip over and crash into a nearby fence.

According to Littlejohn’s sister, Reatha Salter, the car went up in flames while the brother was still inside.

Cellphone video showed deputies trying to get bystanders to stay back from the wreckage as people cried out that someone was in the car.

“Yeah, I’ve been watching it, but I’m trying to make it, like, somebody wake me up. It’s a dream,” Salter said.

Littlejohn, 29, was rushed to Broward Health North, where he were he was declared deceased.

Salter, the deceased’s sister, described the deputy involved crash that was captured on surveillance video. While it’s hard to see Salter said, her brother was seen driving northbound on Third Avenue. Seconds later, another car went by moving much faster than the first. Eventually, the two vehicles collided into each other.

“First I see my brother flew by and then the cop’s car flew past,” Salter said.

BSO spokeswoman Joy Oglesby said, Deputy Gordon Black, 46, was responding to a call when Littlejohn’s speeding car ran a stop sign and hit the deputy’s cruiser. The impact ripped the front bumper and steel support from Black’s cruiser. The deputy was taken to a Boca Raton hospital where he was treated and released.

Oglesby said traffic homicide detectives believe Littlejohn’s rate of speed and failure to heed at the four way stop were contributing factors in the crash.
