A crash on State Road 82 in Fort Myers left an 11-year-old girl critically injured. The crash is being investigated by the officials.

Troopers say a preliminary investigation revealed her mother lost control of her vehicle and drove through a nearby fence. Reports say the girl survived the crash and assumed her mother had died in the crash. She sent text messages to police to alert them of the accident.

She was able to exit the vehicle, collected her belongings and was wandering around seeking help. Authorities were able to trace her location using the text messages she had earlier sent to them.

Police say they received a call that a young girl had been hit by the driver of another vehicle. She sustained critical injuries and was taken to the hospital. The driver remained at the scene. Her mother was taken to the hospital in serious condition.

The crash remains an active investigation.
